Hunter Peace Group is an activist collective committed to promoting peace in the world, based in Newcastle and the Hunter.
Since 2016, we have fought to keep Newcastle a Nuclear Free City, led annual peace commemorations, advocated for the establishment of a Peace Park, campaigned for the removal of foreign bases on Australian soil, and have lobbied the government for an independent defence policy that defends our borders while holding out the hand of peace and friendship to our neighbours and beyond.
2023 Hiroshima Day event flyer
Hunter Peace Group will be commemorating the 80th anniversaries of the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki at the Tighes Hill Peace Park on Saturday 9th August 2025 11 - 2pm.
In our Website we have written quite a bit about Hiroshima and Nagasaki and the horrors the people in these cities suffered when the first ever atomic bombs were stealthily dropped by the USA.
Back in 2017 ICAN was successful in getting the UN Treaty for the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons through the United Nations and this then went out for signature or ratification or both to countries across the world.
At the time ICAN along with Hunter Peace Group and other peace groups in Australia called on the Australian Government to sign/ratify this Treaty and when election time came around in 2019 the Australian Labor Party (Federally), said they would sign after checking out some points. Since that time the Federal Government has not signed. Many of the Parliamentarians signed the Pledge sent to them by ICAN and followed up by individual peace groups which was wonderful as many parliamentarians signed this document - but so far to no avail - our Federal ALP Government has not kept that promise.
Hunter Peace Group, in this 80th anniversary year of the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, is calling on the Albanese Government to keep the promise it made in 2019 in opposition and again once it came to power to sign the UN Treaty for the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons - or better still - ratify it. It is time.

The candlelight vigil had to be moved to the tram sheds due to the teeming rain. Not too many people braved the weather. Leigh Shears Secretary Hunter Workers spoke well and kept spirits our spirits up as we remembered those who have lost their lives in the horrific massacres taking place in Palestine and other parts of the globe.
Some participants at Hunter Peace Group's International Day of Peace Lunch 21st September 2025. Great speakers, great music, great food. The people who came along were very interested in Hunter Peace Group's story-boards which tell a brief history of the amazing peace movement in Newcastle and the Hunter. Friends and members of HPG also had been make peace cranes which were strung and hung around our story-boards, placards and other exhibits. Looked great .
Hunter Peace Group and friends invite you to come and join us at the above rally to let the Albanese Government know Newcastle does not want a nuclear submarine base in our Port ever. Meet at Wheeler Place next to the Civic Theatre in Hunter Street at 12 NOON on Saturday 1st November 2025
